Words cannot describe how excited I am to be apart of the Costa Rican Avian Biology study abroad program. Thoughts are jumping around in my head of the culture shock I am sure to feel when I land in San Jose. It will only be my third time leaving the country and first time to Central America and so I am sure in for a surprise. Similar to what the athletes will experience later this summer in Rio, the Zika virus is a huge concern of mine. I am taking the extra precaution by purchasing multiple long pants and t-shirts to protect me on our hikes. I also am going to be conscious of staying hydrated, as I’m sure the Costa Rican rainforests will steal lots of my energy.

Although I am mindful of these precautions, I am eager to learn of a new culture and landscape that differs greatly from the one I am used to. Whether its walking through a coffee field or driving through the windy hills near the coast, I know I am sure to have an experience of a lifetime.

As I begin to board the plane I think about all the people that have allowed me this amazing opportunity. I am appreciative of CAES for helping with the finances that go into studying abroad. I think about my family back home and how much I will miss them, as this will be the longest I will have been without them in a foreign country. I sit back and relax in my aisle seat and feel rest assured. My best friend is sitting several rows in front of me just as happy as I am for the experience. I know this is going to be a great experience in Costa Rica.
