We created a video series to share some insight from industry experts that just might help you improve your haying operation. You can see the trailer for this video series here: Episode 1: Hay Cutting In this first episode of the “A Cut Above the Rest” video series, we address several concepts relating to hay harvest and conditioning. We address the relationship between forage maturity and Relative Forage Quality (RFQ), determining the time to cut the forage, preparing and adjusting the cutting equipment for safe operation, optimal cutting heights, cutting speed, conditioner types, and tricks to maximizing drying speed. You can see the first episode here: Episode 2: Raking and Tedding The second episode of the “A Cut Above the Rest” video series presents greater detail about how the hay crop should be tedded and raked prior to baling. Using a tedder, especially in combination with a mower-conditioner, can greatly improve your dry down time and relative forage quality. How the tedder and rake are set up and operated can have a big impact on the bale one makes. Learn more about when to rake vs. ted, how fast to operate, and the optimum moisture to achieve before baling in this episode: Episode 3: Baling The third episode of the “A Cut Above the Rest” video series focuses on the final and most important step of the entire process: baling your hay and forage. Learn more about how to measure hay and forage moisture and how that impacts the overall RFQ. The video also discusses the different customer needs, what they are looking for in hay and forage packages, and their livestock requirements. Also, learn about hay baler settings for optimum field operations. Episode 4: Fertility Insights & Crop Winterization The fourth and final episode of the “A Cut Above the Rest” video series developed for the SE Hay Contest with our friends at Massey Ferguson has just been released. In this episode, we focus on agronomic insights and best practices needed to replenish the nutrients lost throughout the season. Also, you can learn about the importance of timing your last cutting to prepare for winterization and a healthy spring crop.
